The academic study of rap music and hip hop culture is quite new. It is part of a trend among academics to carefully examine art and culture, as it is made outside of formal settings, and is used as a lens through which to understand the conditions in which people exist and how these conditions come about and affect people. This includes examining parts of our art and culture that are problematic: racist, sexist, homophobic (among other things). Because of its prevalence and power, taking rap music seriously, with all of its deep problems and exquisite potential, offers an invaluable lens through which to understand the world we live in.
